Description: S100-B, is an acidic protein with a molecular weight of 21 kDa belonging to the S100 family. S100-B contains two EF-hand-type calcium-binding motifs separated by a hinge region with a hydrophobic cleft. S100-B plays an important role in neurodevelopment, differentiation, and brain construction. S100-B has neuroprotective effects, but at high concentrations S100-B is neurotoxic. Extracellular concentration of S100-B increases following brain damage, which easily penetrates into cerebrospinal fluid in brain damage and then into the blood. S100-B is expressed and produced by astrocytes in vertebrate brains and in the CNS, and the astrocytes are the major cells producing S100-B protein in grey matter, as well as oligodendrocytes are the predominant S100-B in protein producing cells in white matter. The major advantage of using S100-B is that elevations in serum or CSF levels provide a sensitive measure for determining CNS injury at the molecular level before gross changes develop, enabling timely delivery of crucial medical intervention before irreversible damage occurs. In addition, S100-B, which is also present in human melanocytes, is a reliable marker for melanoma malignancy both in biotic tissue and in serum.

DNA extraction and purification kit

Description: Successful PCR applications depend on well purified DNA. In diagnostics and analytics of food and medical samples PCR and real-time PCR has many advantages over conventional methods. In all cases it is of importance to have well purified DNA for subsequent PCR, real-time PCR, hybridization or sequencing purposes. Purified DNA leads to higher sensitivity and also specificity of PCR based tests in difficult matrices. With QuickBlue Extraction and Purification Kit you always get high DNA yields and highly purified DNA. The kit uses paramagnetic nano-particles for purification. It can help to purify DNA from difficult matrices like food or even blood in soil for applications in forensic sciences. DNA in Seawater can also be purified. This method avoids extensive centrifugation steps and can thus be applied in environments where centrifuges are not usable. The kits includes proteinase K as a reagent for cell disruption, so that extraction and purification can be performed with the kit. DNA yield from 1 ml bacterial enrichment is 10 μg of Genomic DNA. The protocol can be adapted to automated magnetic bead separation instruments.

Description: Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) is also known as Colony stimulating factor 2 (granulocyte-macrophage), is a cytokine initially characterized by its ability to induce colonies of granulocytes and macrophages from myeloid progenitor cells, and is secreted by macrophages, T cells, mast cells, endothelial cells and fibroblasts. GM-CSF is a cytokine that functions as a white blood cell growth factor. GM-CSF stimulates stem cells to produce granulocytes (neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils) and monocytes. Monocytes exitthe circulation and migrate into tissue, whereupon they mature into macrophages and dendritic cells. Thus, it is part of the immune/inflammatory cascade, by which activation of a small number of macrophages can rapidly lead to an increase in their numbers, a process crucial for fighting infection. The active form of the protein is found extracellularly as a homodimer. Human GM-CSF glycosylated in its mature form. As a part of the immune/inflammatory cascade, GM-CSF promotes Th1 biased immune response, angiogenesis, allergic inflammation, and the development of autoimmunity, and thus worthy of consideration for therapeutic target. GM-CSF has also recently been evaluated in clinical trials for its potential as a vaccine adjuvant in HIV-infected patients. The preliminary results have been promising. GM-CSF is also used as a medication to stimulate the production of white blood cells following chemotherapy.
