Description: Glycosyltransferases that mediate the regio- and stereoselective transfer of sugars, such as the fucosyltransferases, determine cell surface-carbohydrate profiles, which are essential interfaces for biological recognition processes. Fucosyltransferases (FucTs) catalyze the covalent association of fucose to different positional linkages on sugar acceptor molecules. The carbohydrate moieties that are generated are covalently attached to cell surfaces and are necessary to ensure a surface contour that satisfies a variety of physiological roles. FucT-XI is a 492 amino acid single-pass type II membrane protein that belongs to the glycosyltransferase 10 family. Localizing to Golgi apparatus, FucT-XI may act as a fucosyltransferase and exists as two alternatively spliced isoforms. The gene encoding FucT-XI maps to mouse chromosome 14 A3.

Description: LRFN1 is a 771 amino acid single-pass type I membrane protein that belongs to the LRFN family. Containing a fibronectin type-III domain, an Ig-like (immunoglobulin-like) domain, a LRRCT domain, a LRRNT domain and seven LRR (leucine-rich) repeats, LRFN1 is thought to promote neurite outgrowth in hippocampal neurons and is involved in the regulation and maintenance of excitatory synapses. LRFN1 forms heteromeric complexes with LRFN2, LRFN3, LFRN4 and LFRN5, but does not have the ability to form homomeric complexes across cell junctions of adjacent cells like other LRFN family members. The PDZ-binding motif of LRFN1 is required for neurite outgrowth promotion and for SAP 97-, NE-dlg- and PSD-95-binding. LRFN1 is encoded by a gene located on human chromosome 19q13.2 and mouse chromosome 7 A3.

Description: CD66e (CEACAM5; CEA) belongs to the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) gene family. It encodes a glycosyl phosphatidyl inositol (GPI)-linked glycoprotein with a Mr of 180'000-200'000 which is most strongly expressed on epithelial cells of the fetal and adult colon and to a minor extent on epithelial cells of the stomach and sweat glands, squamous epithelial cells of the tongue, esophagus and cervix. CD66e is used as a tumor marker for early detection of recurrent disease due to its expression in adenocarcinomas of the colon, lung, breast, stomach and pancreas and in mucinous ovarian carcinomas. Like all members of the CEACAM family, it consists of a single N domain, with structural homology to the immunoglobulin variable domains, followed by six immunoglobulin constant-like A (A1, A2, A3) and B domains (B1, B2, B3).

Description: Crystallins are separated into two classes: taxon-specific, or enzyme, and ubiquitous. The latter class constitutes the major proteins of vertebrate eye lens and maintains the transparency and refractive index of the lens. Since lens central fiber cells lose their nuclei during development, these crystallins are made and then retained throughout life, making them extremely stable proteins. Mammalian lens crystallins are divided into alpha, beta, and gamma families; beta and gamma crystallins are also considered as a superfamily. Alpha and beta families are further divided into acidic and basic groups. Seven protein regions exist in crystallins: four homologous motifs, a connecting peptide, and N- and C-terminal extensions. Beta-crystallins, the most heterogeneous, differ by the presence of the C-terminal extension (present in the basic group, none in the acidic group). Beta-crystallins form aggregates of different sizes and are able to self-associate to form dimers or to form heterodimers with other beta-crystallins. This gene, a beta acidic group member, encodes two proteins (crystallin, beta A3 and crystallin, beta A1) from a single mRNA, the latter protein is 17 aa shorter than crystallin, beta A3 and is generated by use of an alternate translation initiation site. Deletion of exons 3 and 4 causes the autosomal dominant disease 'zonular cataract with sutural opacities'.
