Prostanoid receptor ligand
Free acid form of the cytoprotective PGE₁ analog misoprostol. Misoprostol prevents NSAID-induced gastric ulceration. The free acid form is active in cell free assays and in cell culture and receptor preparations (receptor binding assays etc.). The methyl ester form (misoprostol) is a prodrug and must be hydrolyzed via intracellular or other esterases in order to display biological activity.
Soluble in 100% ethanol (>15 mg/ml) or DMSO (>20 mg/ml).
