Phosphatidylethanol is used as a chromatographic standard to assay PLD activity in intact cells via the conversion of phosphatidylcholine to phosphatidylethanol by phospholipase D in the presence of ethanol.
In the presence of ethanol, phospholipase D converts phosphatidylcholine to phosphatidylethanol. This conversion is the basis of a sensitive and selective assay for PLD activity in intact cells.

Soluble in chloroform.
